Open Field

The open course will be set on a field that is actually made up of two adjacent fields totaling more than 80 acres.  These irrigated fields of Orchard Grass are used for three cuttings of haylage during the spring and summer months and pasture during the fall.  The field slopes up slightly from the post to the setout with a few rolls that will wreak havoc if you find yourself off line on the fetch.  There will be room for a 525 yard open outrun, 450 yards on the second leg of the double lift.

From Salem
Traveling North on I-5 take the I-205 exit.  Take exit 27 (Camas Exit) off I-205 and travel East about 6 miles on Hwy 14 to Camas Exit 12.  The exit ramp leads you right into NW 6th Ave.  Follow this about a mile into Camas.  Go straight through the Stop at Adams St. (note there is a free right turn at this intersection – don’t take it).  Stay on NW 6th Ave.  Go straight through the stop at Dallas St.  When you reach the Stop at Garfield Street turn LEFT.  This road is also named SR-500 West.  This road will lead you up a hill and through a “dog-leg” left turn before you come to another Stop at Everett Street.  Turn RIGHT on Everett and follow the SR-500 West signs about 2.5 miles until you reach a 20 MPH corner.  At this point turn LEFT off of SR-500 onto NE 3rd Street.  Travel another quarter mile and you will see a Dead End sign on the corner.  Keep going straight to the Dead End.  Don’t make the turn onto NE 257th Ave.  NE 3rd St. Dead Ends and the Dairy is at the end.

Good Dog Photo
Marroni
Dennis and Jan at Meeker 2008
Dennis and his wife Jean ranched at Bear Canyon, Alberta for thirty-five years along with their three children where they ran cows and yearlings.  During the last few years they ran about two thousand yearlings.  They started working with dogs in 1988 and used them mostly for the cattle.

Over the last ten years Dennis started traveling to the United States more often to attend trials.  He now spends about two months each year trialing in the U.S.  His most notable wins were last year at Meeker where he placed first with his dog Jake and second with Jan.  He also managed the same feat two years earlier at the 2006 Powderhorn Classic in Wyoming.

Last year Dennis and Jean sold their ranch at Bear Canyon and bought 320 acres in Dawson Creek, British Columbia.  They hope to enjoy life at a slower pace now.  Dennis and Jean have six Great Grand children who they say are “Truly Grand”!  They run 200 head of sheep that are raised for working their dogs and putting on a sheepdog trial every year at the end of July.

OSDS Awards Banquet

The Oregon Sheep Dog Society will hold their Annual Awards Banquet on the evening of Saturday, August 15th at the trial site.  Please join us under the tent as we honor our Hall of Fame members and recognize our fellow members’ achievements.  It will be a great opportunity to catch up with old and new friends and celebrate this year’s accomplishments.

The meal will be catered by Jo Foody's of Vancouver, WA and include barbequed chicken and pulled pork along with salads, sides, drinks and dessert.  Everyone is welcome and the banquet is complimentary to trial participants.  Additional seats can be purchased for $20 per plate by contacting Lynn Johnston by August 1st.

Pro Novice Field

The Pro Novice and Novice classes will run on a separate field  that is about 25 acres in size with room for a 200 yard outrun.  This field, with a mix of Orchard Grass and Canary Grass, is considered rough pasture land and is used for pasturing heifers during the summer months.  The field slopes up slightly from the post to the setout and is bordered on the east side by a rise that creates a natural separation from the open field.
NOTE:  As of 6/29 NN, PN & Nursery classes are full.  Additional entries will be placed on a waiting list.
